What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid drug that is primarily used for pain management. It's a powerful painkiller that is estimated to be 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Fentanyl can be administered through a variety of methods, including injection, transdermal patch, lozenges, nasal sprays, and tablets. Because of its potency, fentanyl is dangerous when used improperly or without a prescription. It can cause respiratory depression, leading to respiratory arrest and death. Fentanyl has also been associated with a substantial increase in overdose deaths in recent years due to its presence in illicit drugs, such as counterfeit prescription pills or heroin.

What is Naloxone?

Naloxone (Narcan) is a medication used to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. It works by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain and can quickly restore normal breathing in someone who has overdosed on opioids such as heroin or prescription painkillers like hydrocodone, oxycodone, fentanyl, and morphine. Naloxone can be administered via injection or nasal spray, and is considered a safe and effective way to prevent deaths from opioid overdose. It is often used by emergency medical personnel and first responders, as well as by family members and friends of people at risk of overdose.
